Being an Attorney
Many prospective attorneys second guess whether or not this is a profession that they would like to do because they are concerned as to if there is too much writing involved. There have been prospective attorneys that have passed the LSAT, made it all the way through law school, then never bother taking the bar so that they may officially practice because they think that there may be too much writing involved. With most instances, lawyers will tell you that it all depends on what type of lawyer you are. There are some lawyers that will tell you that they do not do a lot of writing, but there are other lawyers that tell you that all they do is write. Most lawyers will tell you that as you further advance in your career, you are more inclined to make this decision yourself. However, most attorneys find themselves doing more writing than they bargained for when they first start off. In fact, there are many instances in which new attorneys have to write an enormous amount when they begin practice, but if those attorneys are able to stick it out, they will find themselves writing a lot less often later on down the line.
1. One instance that attorneys are surprised to find themselves writing so much is due to the correspondence that they have to write on behalf of their clients. New attorneys are aware that they are going to have to write a few brief letters here and there to fax over to the courts, but many new lawyers do not realize that this procedure entails a lot more than they have bargained for. Many times, attorneys find that it is not so much that the correspondence letters that they are going to write are long, but it is the quantity. Lawyers find themselves writing so many letters that they are often discouraged by the process.
2. Another aspect of the job that causes attorneys to have to write so much is because they have to rewrite and revise company documents. Many business lawyers are in for a big surprise when they discover how much writing comes along with the job. Business lawyers know that there is going to be a lot of accounting involved, but they are taken aback by some of the writing. Some business lawyers will find themselves writing for hours at a time. Other than that, they seem to enjoy practicing business law.
3. Although many attorneys find themselves writing a great deal, just like with any other industry, you have to always remember that there are always going to be templates in place. Many lawyers rely on existing templates in order to do their writing. A few revisions here and there enable them to cut down on some of the time writing. There are also paralegals that are in place to assist in some instances with documentation.
